About the Parish
St. Antony’s Puthenpeedika is situated in a village among abundantly grown coconut trees all around. This is about 15 km far from Thrissur city on Kanjany - Peringottukkara Road. The church is an old and prominent institution, in the area, and it has been contributing to the social, religious and cultural advancement of the people here. St. Antony of Padua in the patron of the church.
The parish has about 850 families on its rolls. These are sub-divided further into small units, consisting of about 40 families each. Every unit is identified with a biblical name of the place where Lord Jesus lived and preached the Gospel. The church is situated on a ‘2 acre land’ with facilities of accommodation for priests and the guests. The cemetery is adjacent to the church.
The church has a subsidiary at Muttichoor, where Holy Mass is said only on SUNDAYS and other days of obligation. Besides the church has the following chapels coming under its jurisdiction. They are; St. Micheal’s at East Angadi, St. Antony’s, St. Sebastian’s, both at Vadukkumurri and St. Antony’s building complex at Puthenpeedika centre.
There are pious organization in the church. Some of them are doing excellent work in the social field. Members of St. Vincent de Paul Society indulge in various social and philanthropic works. They visit the poor as well as the sick and render them services, besides giving away cash to meet their urgent requirements. There are people doing works silently in the church during their spare times. They clean and arrange the altar and its surroundings. The 40 hour - long adoration of holy communion is a spectacular event at this church. It is celebrated every year. Parishioners work round the clock for making this successful. The Altar is decorated beautifully and is set with flowers etc. to make it more devotional.
During the season of lent, some Parishioners after their normal work assemble in the church to participate ‘the way of cross’. It becomes so devotional that, as the days progress the number of people joining such sessions get steadily increased & the performance reaches a lovely climax. The days closer to Easter witness a part of such people taking on a pilgrimage to Mount Malayattoor. On good Fridays, people living far and near are drawn to this church to take part in the penitential March which carries the symbolic body of Jesus through the streets. The sacred remains of Holy Cross brought from Rome is still kept as a valuable treasure in this church.
