Parish History
The church was constructed during the year 1831. Previously there was a small chapel here under the jurisdiction of Pazhuvil Parish. At that time, Holy Mass used to be held here only on Sundays and the days of obligation. But in the course of time, the walls of the chapel could not stand to the lashing rains and it fell. There were some 50 Christian families living here and they approached the Governadhor of Malankara Church, seeking permission of to build a new church. The permission was granted and the work began. The new church was ready for blessing by October 1831. A primary school, by the initiative of the church came into being after a gap of 60 years; to say exactly in 1890. Step by step various kinds of repair, re – construction and renovation were carried out on the buildings for creation of more space, facilities etc.
Since the construction and blessing of the church in 1831, there have been 45 priests, till to date, who served as priests/ vicars here. Some of them have done excellent work during their tenure, for the improvement and well being of the church.
Rev. Fr. Sebastian Vazhapully, a priest who served here will ever be remembered by the people of Puthenpeedka, for his great contributions towards the development of the church and the welfare of the community.
The older people still narrate the skill employed by him while making renovations to the building, such as construction of Nadapura (front hall) and the sacred Heart chapel adjacent to it (Now converted as Mangalalayam). He is the man who introduced a bye-law for the members of Darshana Sabha. Besides, he improved the choir by replacing the old musical instruments with new and also by inducting talented people into the choir. He had a rare opportunity of serving this Parish for 29 years with a break of one or two years in between. On his death, the body was brought to this parish and buried here as per his last wish.
Rev. Fr. Varu Kondenkandath (1905) Kochu Varkey Thekkekkara (1906), Rev. Fr. Gee Varghese Vayalattil (1907-08) were same of the priests who had brought about good changes in social, economical and religious spheres of this place. During the period of Antony Chakkalamattom, eminent artists and architects were invited and modifications made to the places where the alter stood, with beautifully carved and painted statues, flowers etc. The hall was decorated with attractive lamps. Besides, he took special steps to improve the standard of choir.
During the year 1936, Shri Sree Moolam Thirunal Sree Ramavarma, the Maharaja of Kochi paid a visit to the Puthenpeedia Parish and it was considered to be a great event for the people here.
As a mark of his visit and to express his happiness over the Christian Community living here, the King presented a letter to the Parish. The letter said to be “ The Mangala Patram” from Maharaja of Kochi, is still kept as a valuable treasure in the Church.
Right from the beginning, there has been initiative, help and co-operation from parishioners in all the matters concerning the Church. St. Antony’s Church Puthenpeedika stands high in the Arch – Diocese of Thrissur, while reviewing the statistics of people choosing ‘Church’ as a vocation in their life. This is clearly evident from the list showing the number of priests and nuns hailing from this area. The people here are peace-loving hard-working, and devotional and hope to contribute still more to the betterment of the church in times to come.
